Just over half (51 per cent) of bereaved women reported lower household income, compared to a third of men, according to a poll.

Women also reported lower disposable income, 45 per cent compared to 24 per cent of men according to research from Royal London.

Its Losing a Partner report showed that women suffer more financially and practically in the aftermath of losing a spouse or long-term partner.

Around four in 10, or 44 per cent, of women had to cut back on discretionary spending such as holidays, compared to a third of men.
