Children face the increasing prospect of inheriting diddly-squat once their parents pass away, if a recent Prudential survey is anything to go by.

According to the research, only 28 per cent of those retiring this year think they will be able to afford to leave an inheritance after they have shuffled off this mortal coil - down from a high of more than half (52 per cent) in 2011.

However, the study also highlights the fact that pensioners are making sure that their families do not go without – with 35 per cent claiming to provide regular financial handouts to family members, worth an average of nearly £250 each month.
