Aviva looks to Canada Life for life insurance chief

Aviva has appointed Doug Brown as chief executive of UK and Ireland life insurance.

Mr Brown is currently chief executive officer of Canada Life in the UK and in his new role will report to Aviva Group chief executive Amanda Blanc.

He is expected to join Aviva in April 2021 with his appointment being subject to regulatory approval.

Mr Brown takes over from Angela Darlington who has decided to move away from corporate life and will leave Aviva in April, after a handover period.

He has led Canada Life’s UK business for the past six years and prior to this was Canada Life’s UK chief operating officer.

He has also held a number of other senior roles in the sector including chief risk officer at Aviva Europe and regional president of AIG Life, UK and Ireland.

Ms Blanc, said: “Our aim is to be the UK’s leading insurer, providing customers with all their savings, retirement and insurance needs, at every step of their lives.

“Doug is a great appointment for Aviva and he will play a key role as we transform Aviva’s performance in the UK.”

Earlier this week (December 14), Aviva confirmed it had agreed to sell Aviva Vietnam Life Insurance Company Limited to Manulife Financial Asia Limited.

It was the latest sell-off Aviva has conducted as Ms Blanc fulfils her pledge to "focus [the company's] portfolio" and pull back from international markets.

Following her appointment in August, Ms Blanc said Aviva would focus on its larger businesses in the UK, Ireland and Canada.
