Jupiter expands into EMD space with Pioneer hire

Jupiter has poached Pioneer Investments manager Alejandro Arevalo to launch an emerging market debt (EMD) strategy at the fund house and bolster the £3bn Jupiter Strategic Bond fund’s growing interest in the asset class.

Mr Arevalo will join Jupiter after four years at Pioneer, where he has worked as an emerging markets corporate debt portfolio manager. He has spent 18 years working in emerging market fixed income.

The move marks the next phase in Jupiter’s attempt to broaden its product range. Its fixed income funds have seen sizeable inflows in recent years, but its onshore dedicated bond fund range remains limited to just two products: a corporate bond fund and the Strategic Bond fund run by Ariel Bezalel.

Chief investment officer Stephen Pearson said: “We have steadily built out our fixed income team in recent years and have been keen to develop our emerging market debt capabilities as part of this expansion.

“Our unconstrained bond strategy managed by Ariel Bezalel has been increasing exposure to this asset class and we believe Alejandro’s track record, investment process and flexible approach will add significantly to our expertise in this area as we look to broaden our fixed income product suite.”

The hire follows the firm’s appointment of credit analyst Christian Holder last month.
