Post-Brexit vote, clients will need to know what to do with their investment portfolios to prepare for the eventual departure of the UK from the European Union.
This was the view of Nick French, UK managing director of UK wealth management at Russell Investments.
In an interview with FTAdviser, Mr French said advisers' clients should be concerned about Brexit - as and when it does happen - but that they needed to put this event into a longer-term context.
He said: "Advisers and their clients should look at this in the context of other market movements over time and really put it into some kind of perspective.
We've used the words keep 'calm and carry on' before but it is important in this environment to avoid the noise and remain calm."
Most investors are investing for the long-term and it is vital for them to remember this fact and not to have any knee-jerk reactions.
He told FTAdviser that advisers had already done a good job in helping their clients prepare for the post-Brexit world.
"For those particular clients at or near retirement, I believe it is important for advisers to help derisk their investment portfolios. Even if the expected high volatility does not occur, it is important to prepare for that eventuality.
"Otherwise, most investors are investing for the long-term and it is vital for them to remember this fact and not to have any knee-jerk reactions."
He added that Brexit was just one of any number of significant market-moving events that would or could happen at any time in a client's investing lifetime, so it was crucial that advisers and their clients realised this and remembered they have a long-term strategy.
Mr French said it was all about managing expectations, especially given the low interest rate environment in the UK at the moment.
He said: "What history shows is that it doesn't always repeat itself - but in reality, it does".
Mr French explained that people do need to look at the data and advisers using historic data tools can help clients, providing knowledge and understanding of what has happened before when there have been other market-changing events, and use this to help clients realise the value of remaining investment over the long-term.
