Baillie Gifford's Whitley to retire after 37 years

Baillie Gifford Japan trust manager Sarah Whitley and two other partners at the firm are to retire in 2018, Investment Adviser can reveal.

Ms Whitley, the firm's longest serving partner, will step down on April 30, 2018. Fixed income partners Stephen Rodger and Ken Barker will also step down on that date.

Japan trust co-manager Matthew Brett will become lead manager on the portfolio once Ms Whitley, who has run the trust since 2001, retires.

Japan Growth manager Donald Farquharson will become head of Japanese equities.

Mr Rodger's retirement will see Gregory Turnbull Schwartz assume lead responsibility for all investment grade portfolios. Torcail Stewart will remain in charge of the company's Corporate Bond fund.

Baillie Gifford joint senior partner Andrew Telford said: "Sarah has generated excellent returns for clients over more than three decades...we would like to thank her for her remarkable dedication to the firm.

"Our sincere thanks also go to Stephen Rodger and Ken Barker for their significant contributions over many years within our fixed income business."
