Miton launches multi-asset balanced fund

Miton is launching a Balanced Multi-asset fund.

The fund will be run by David Jane and Anthony Rayner, who currently run three funds with total assets of just less than £900m.

Each of those funds has a cautious or defensive remit.

This fund will be in the IA Mixed Investment 40 to 85 per cent sector.

Mr Jane said the new fund will deliver returns much closer to those of equity markets, and so it is likely to be more volatile than the other mandates he and his colleagues run.

The managers invest directly in equities and bonds, rather than buy other funds.

This fund will have around 100 individual investments, compared with 150 in his other funds, as this product will have less of its capital allocated to bonds, and so fewer individual bonds.

The fund manager said the major global themes in his funds right now are ageing populations and technological change, while the biggest macroeconomic theme on which he is focusing in the fund is higher inflation.

Nimesh Patel, an adviser at intermediary firm EA Solutions in London, said the fund is a natural development for the managers as they have proven they can run lower risk mandates.

He said the multi-asset fund market is swamped and it may take this fund to gain some traction.

Alan Steel, who runs Alan Steel Asset Management in Scotland, said he is a big fan of the managers of this fund, and has been invested in the funds run by Mr Jane and Mr Rayner for a long time.
