Labour warns of 'catastrophic' no-deal Brexit

The Labour party has warned a no-deal outcome on Brexit will lead the country into chaos.

At the party’s annual conference in Liverpool today (25 September), Keir Starmer, shadow secretary of state for exiting the European Union, said a transitional period for the UK after Brexit was crucial and a no-deal scenario would "plunge the country into chaos."

He said: "No deal would be catastrophic. No government has the right to plunge the country into chaos because of its own failure.

"No one is ruling out remain as an option and jobs and the economy must come first come first.

No deal would be catastrophic. No government has the right to plunge the country into chaos because of its own failure.

"The Labour Party was right to say that European Union citizens are not bargaining chips, we were right to say that there is going to be a need for a transitional period so we don't go off a cliff edge. We want a single market deal to accompany a customs union."

Mr Starmer also said that the Labour party will "vote down" prime minister Theresa May's stance on Brexit if it does not meet the six tests for Brexit that it outlined in March 2017.

"This prime minister does not deserve our trust," Mr Starmer said.

"[Theresa May] has no credible plans for Brexit with not long to go until the deadline and no majority for Chequers. If the prime minister returns with a deal that does not meet our six tests, we will vote down her deal.

"A vague or blind Brexit is a leap to nowhere and [the Labour Party] will have no part of it. This is not about frustrating the process, it is about stopping a destructive Tory Brexit."
