Quilter advice director Speirs steps down

Mr Speirs will still act as vice chairman of the QPCA board. He will be succeeded in the interim by Darren Sharkey, who has been appointed interim managing director.

The company said the handover work has begun, but Mr Speirs will officially step down at the end of December and commence his new role on 1 January 2019.

Mr Speirs joined Old Mutual Wealth, now Quilter plc, in 2015 to launch Quilter Private Client Advisers, which is a national financial planning business and part of Quilter's Intrinsic Network. The business now operates from six regional hubs across the UK, with 67 financial planners and 175 employees.

Mr Sharkey has been with Quilter for 20 years will also retain his role as Intrinsic finance director.

Mr Speirs said: "Advice sits at the heart of everything that Quilter does and it has been a privilege to spend the past three years building Quilter Private Client Advisers to the business it is today.

"It’s the right time for me to move away from the day-to-day running of the business as I edge closer to retirement. I am delighted to be able to offer counsel to Darren and the leadership team as it develops the business for its next phase of growth."

Mr Sharkey said: "We have marked our third anniversary of Quilter Private Client Advisers, a business that has gone from a standing start to develop and acquire six offices throughout the UK. I am thrilled to build on these foundations to support future growth."

Mr Speirs ran Buckles - the largest IFA firm in Wales - from 1987 until 2008 when he sold the firm to South African financial services firm Sanlam. At Sanlam he served as head of UK distribution and chief executive officer.

Buckles rebranded to Sanlam Private Wealth which acquired wealth management firm English Mutual in 2012.

In 2014 Mr Speirs lost his role as chief executive officer amid a shake-up of senior management to Alex Morley, the then chief executive officer of English Mutual. But Mr Speirs still continued in his role as head of UK distribution.

Mr Speirs’ daughter Sarah Waring also followed her father’s path by venturing into a financial advice career. She has been director at QPCA since 2017 and will now assume the role of client proposition director.

QPCA has made two additional changes to the team to support Mr Sharkey.

Dominic Rose has been appointed strategy and acquisitions director. He was previously director of the London office.

And Andy Moore has been appointed national director of financial planning. He was previously national sales director.

In June 2018, Old Mutual Wealth floated on the London Stock Exchange while rebranding as Quilter.

The full rebrand will be phased over a two-year period, with some parts of the business rebranded at a later date.

Quilter rebranded its national financial planning business to Quilter Private Client Advisers.

It belongs to the Quilter’s wider Intrinsic network which is made up of 3,000 advisers.
