Baillie Gifford tops fund sales in 2018

Edinburgh-based fund house Baillie Gifford has had the highest net sales of any fund house in the UK market in 2018, according to new data.

Data compiled by Pridham Consulting showed the firm had net retail sales of £3.1bn, with the next biggest seller being Legal and General Investment Management with net sales of £2.5bn.

Fundsmith had net retail sales of £2.1bn and came in third place.

Legal and General had the highest sales figures in the final turbulent quarter of 2018 however, bringing in £894m.

Miton, Man GlG and Liontrust made the top ten in retail sales terms for the first time.

Meanwhile BlackRock topped the charts for gross retail sales as it brought in £26.8bn, but it does not feature in the top ten for net retail sales.

Helen Pridham, who compiled the data said: "Baillie Gifford has thrived in recent years thanks to its emphasis on active investment management, with its American and Japanese funds among its best sellers.

"LGIM, on the other hand, has benefitted from its sales of passive funds, though sales of its actively managed funds have also been increasing."
