Sharma replaces Barwell as housing minister

Alok Sharma, MP for Reading West, was named minister of state for housing and planning, yesterday (14 June).

Mr Sharma was first elected in 2010 and in 2016 was appointed parliamentary under-secretary of state in the foreign and commonwealth office by prime minister Theresa May.

He replaces Gavin Barwell, who lost his Croydon Central seat to Labour's Sarah Jones, in the general election.

It was later announced Mr Barwell will take over as Ms May's chief of staff.

Former chiefs of staff Nick Timothy and Fiona Hill, the previous advisers to the prime minister, resigned after public calls for them to be sacked for their advice to Ms May.

Mr Timothy has claimed he was responsible for the Conservative's manifesto.

Mr Barwell had been housing minister for just less than a year, and was the sixth person to hold the role since the coalition government of 2010.
