In its annual survey of home buyers, Which? Mortgage Advisers looked at the biggest issues reported during the home buying process and found that a whopping 66 per cent experience problems

The most common problem was delays caused by others in the chain, which was reported by 19 per cent of those surveyed.

The data also found that 18 per cent claimed they found it difficult to find a suitable property and 13 per cent said the property they bought was left in a poor condition or with unexpected furniture.

As many as 12 per cent reported they encountered problems on completion day and 10 per cent had a problem or delay while getting a mortgage.

David Blake, principal mortgage adviser for Which? Mortgage Advisers, said: "Moving home can be time-consuming, stressful and expensive. While there are some problems that are out of your control, there are some things you can do.

"Clearer communication and opting for well-respected mortgage advisers, removal companies and conveyancers who are able to work to your timescales can all help to give you a smooth move."

This comes as Which? Mortgage Advisers previously found that three in 10 property purchases fall through, reiterating the obstacles that are in the way for those looking to buy and sell property in the UK.

Ishaan Malhi, chief executive office and founder of Trussle, said: "Buying a home is hugely exciting but the experience isn’t always smooth.

"I've experienced it first-hand, where there is too much jargon, too much complexity and not enough transparency.

"Our own research has shown that two in five homeowners find the mortgage experience stressful, equivalent to 625,000 people every year.

"Paperwork and jargon are regarded as the biggest contributors to this stress, which can be alleviated if more providers adopted digital methods such as downloadable statements and making account balances accessible online."

Daniel Hodgson, mortgage adviser from Ipswich-based Just Mortgage Brokers, said: “Albeit the figures quoted on first impression appear alarming, on reflection it is perhaps not too unexpected to see. 

"With many different elements attached to the home buying process, and on occasions with many different parties involved within the chain of events, getting these all to work together seamlessly to suit all on every occasion is a tall order. 

"With modern technology communication should now be much better however, lack of understanding of terminology still represents it's barriers. 

"With all the checks in place when buying a property it is still somewhat amazing, considering how much in monetary terms is involved, how little time we take personally to physically look at the property itself when deciding to put in that all important offer."
