Pension fund manager accused of stealing £1m

A pension fund manager accused of stealing £1m from one of the richest local authorities may not be fit to stand trial, a court heard.

Ian Woodall, 45, is said to have siphoned off £1,075,375.34 from Westminster City Council between 2009 and 2012.

He is said to have done so while Tania Woodall, 46, allegedly concealed the proceeds valued at around £1m.

Mr Woodall, is said to have transferred £1,012,272.04 of that cash to overseas bank accounts.

Prosecutor Kevin Dent told Southwark Crown Court said: 'We are here in relation to a fitness to plead hearing so far as Mr Woodall is concerned.'

Mr Dent said that three psychiatrists have assessed Mr Woodall but have differing opinions about whether he is fit to enter pleas.

Judge Michael Grieve, QC, adjourned the case for further psychiatric reports to be served and listed the matter for a trial of issue hearing on 12 March.

Tania Woodall also attended court having previously been arraigned earlier in the year and denies the charge against her.

She helped her husband, who has difficulty walking and struggles with his speech, into and out of the dock.

A provisional trial date was set for January, but it had been moved and is provisionally fixed for a two-week trial on 10 September dependent on Mr Woodall's fitness to plead.

Tania Woodall, of Dell Close Cottages, Dell Close, Mickleham, Dorking, Surrey, denies concealing criminal property.

Ian Woodall, of the same address, is yet to enter pleas to one count each of fraud by abuse of position, theft by employee and concealing criminal property.

They were both released on unconditional bail.
