Labour names new shadow pensions minister

Jack Dromey has been named as the new shadow pensions minister following Alex Cunningham's departure last month.

The Labour MP for Birmingham Erdington, will be the fourth person to hold this brief in the shadow cabinet since the 2015 general election.

Mr Dromey, who entered Parliament in 2010, was previously shadow minister for labour and will be replaced by Laura Pidcock, MP for North West Durham.

He announced his appointment on Twitter on Saturday (13 January), saying it was "an honour" to the new shadow pensions minister.

He said he will champion the workers "robbed of their pensions by greedy bosses".

Mr Cunningham left his front bench position on 20 December after breaking with whip in a Brexit-related vote.

He had voted against the Labour whip on an amendment to the EU withdrawal bill, alongside 61 other Labour MPs.

Mr Dromey has not rebelled against his party in the current parliament but resigned from his post as shadow police minister in June 2016 along with 23 other members of the shadow cabinet during that summer's Labour leadership crisis.

In his resignation letter he had asked Mr Corbyn to "put principle before self" and step down from the party leadership.

He was appointed shadow labour minister later in the year.
