“Pensions should be a key part of the conversation at divorce and it is a time when the right legal and financial advice is critical to determine what you are entitled to – which is often more than people think.”
Alistair Cunningham, financial planning director at Wingate Financial Planning, said it was easy to underestimate the value of pensions even when settling a divorce through the courts.
He said: "People can very easily under- or overestimate the value of their pension.
"Before people get divorced, they must disclose all their financial assets to solicitors but it is easy to underestimate the value. It is therefore important that people get the right advice before divorcing so that they don't lose out."
