Spending review could fix pension tax problem

Sir Steve Webb, former pensions minister and director of policy at Royal London, would welcome such announcement.

He noted the Treasury generally regarded the comprehensive spending review as purely a spending announcement and unlikely to include any tax measures.

He said: “This is likely to be a chance to say that if you vote Conservative in the expected general election you will get more for the people’s priorities of education, health, policing etc.

“Of course, delivering effective healthcare requires, among other things, fixing the tapered annual allowance issue that has caused such problems in the NHS and elsewhere, so it would be good to see such an announcement next week, but I’m not holding my breath.”
