Social care

Altmann: It's not too late for govt to reverse NI hike

“The fact is, for many elderly or vulnerable people, a lack of adequate social care can be at least as life threatening as poor healthcare.”

A government spokesperson said: “The Health and Social Care Levy will provide £5.4bn for adult social care over the next three years, allowing us to begin a comprehensive programme of reform and improve social care outcomes through an affordable, high-quality and sustainable adult social care system.

“This amount includes over £3.6bn to reform the social care charging system and enable all local authorities to move towards paying providers a fair rate for care. Small businesses are protected from the levy through our employment allowance – meaning that just under 40 per cent of firms will not be affected at all and the wage bills of the next 40 per cent will rise by less than 1 per cent on average."

FTAdviser uderstands funding also includes more than £1.7bn for major improvements across the social care system in England, including a £500mn investment in the industry's workforce.
