Financial advisers often struggle with the issue of succession planning for their businesses, but not Joanna Streames.

The mortgage and protection adviser, and the creative mind behind Velvet Mortgage and Insure Services, has not only overcome various challenges to run her own business, but has also encouraged her daughters to promote the protection message.

Speaking to Simoney Kyriakou, senior editor of FTAdviser, Streames said how she had felt it was a "calling" to help Britons get the protection they need to event-proof their lives, after being bereaved at 19 when her mother died, leaving her in sole guardianship of her 12-year-old sister.

"My middle daughter has felt that calling too", she said of Bella, who now works at VMIS.

Her eldest daughter, who works in Dubai, always encourages Streames to tackle social media marketing to engage younger, female clients, she said.

Meanwhile, she added: "My youngest daughter is still doing A-levels and she tells all her friends to think about insurance cover, and they've often come into the office to see what we do."

According to Streames, it is vital to bring women into the industry so there is better representation among what has been traditionally a male-dominated industry.

And while it was never her intention to have her three daughters pursue her passion for protection, she said it was wonderful to know that she is helping not only to future-proof the financial health of her clients, but also succession-proof her business by keeping it in the family.
