Where are they now? Catching up with Financial Adviser staff

Colin Chapman is just one of many journalists who went on to make their name as a result of their work at Financial Adviser.

This list is by no means exhaustive, but serves as an example of how influential and well-regarded Financial Adviser is.

Mr Chapman, the first editor of Financial Adviser, is known for his business television work for the Australian broadcaster ABC.

Other Financial Adviser alumni include Debbie Harrison, who was Financial Adviser’s deputy news editor at launch. She went on to write for consumer finance titles and is now a senior visiting fellow of the Pensions Institute.

Kevin O’Donnell, who rose through the ranks to become editor-in-chief, joined Financial Adviser after a career as a local newspaper reporter. He now runs his own publishing company.

Other reporters have gone on to work for national newspapers, including James Coney, who now edits the Daily Mail’s City pages, and Holly Thomas, who went on to edit the money pages of the Daily Express. Former reporter Ed Monk went on to be the investment editor at the Daily Telegraph before moving to Fidelity Personal Investing, and Matt Williams also graduated from the news desk to work for Al Jazeera America before becoming senior editor, digital for ABC News in New York City. Kate Hughes was deputy features editor before later finding her way to the money editor position at The Independent.

Financial Adviser has also proved itself a showcase for financial expertise beyond journalism. Maike Currie, now a commentator for Fidelity, was deputy features editor of Financial Adviser and also a writer on sister publication Investors Chronicle.

But Financial Adviser also managed to retain and attract journalists who have a track record of investigative reporting: Hal Austin, also a former editor, joined Financial Adviser after working at the Daily Mail for 14 years.

Financial Adviser’s current editor, Emma Ann Hughes, came to Financial Adviser after editing other successful publications, including Mortgage Adviser.
