Ex-FSA chief Sants named guidance body chairman

Former Financial Services Authority chief executive Sir Hector Sants has been named as the chairman of the new financial guidance body.

He is listed as chairman of the single financial guidance body, which has yet to be given a name, in a job advert for the position of non-executive director on the body's board.

Sir Hector was chief executive of the FSA between 2007 and 2012, during which time he oversaw the implementation of the Retail Distribution Review.

He famously said he wanted those regulated by the FCA to be "very afraid" of the watchdog.

His appointment as chairman of the single financial guidance body has not yet been formally announced.

Since leaving the FSA Sir Hector has been chairman of StepChange debt charity and vice chairman of international management consultancy firm Oliver Wyman.

The plans for a single financial guidance body were announced by George Osborne, the previous chancellor of the Exchequer, in 2015 to create a more "joined-up approach".

It will bring together the functions of the Money Advice Service, The Pensions Advisory Service and Pension Wise into a single body.

The bill creating the body has only recently completed its progress through Parliament and HM Treasury has said the body itself would not come into existence until autumn at the earliest.

The new body is set to be created after the Money Advice Service came under fire from MPs in the past for spending too much money on marketing and duplicating others' services.

An independent review in 2015 stated Mas needed to "reboot its business model" as part of wide-ranging changes.
