CII elects president and deputy for 2023
  Incoming CII president, Russell Higginbotham

The Chartered Insurance Institute has appointed Swiss Re Solutions chief executive, Russell Higginbotham as its president for 2023.

Higginbotham, who began his career in 1986 with a UK life insurer, will work closely with current CII president Peter Blanc, before he takes over as president in January.

Higginbotham joined Swiss Re in 1994 and served in various roles in the life and health reinsurance development and strategy teams.

He is currently deputy president of the CII.

The institute also appointed Ian Callaghan as deputy president during its AGM which took place yesterday (October 4).

Callaghan is insurer relations director at Kingfisher Insurance.

Higginbotham will also become chair of the CII’s President’s Forum, which was created in 2021 to “explore new and emerging risks and ways the insurance profession can address the unmet needs of consumers”.

Higginbotham’s election follows a period of strain between the CII and its subsidiary, the Personal Finance Society.

However, it was announced last month that both organisations had reached an agreement in principle on a “range of matters, following constructive discussions”.
