For many this could be sorely needed income, as many in retirement rely on their savings to supplement their income.
There is a host of a products for advisers to look at in the search for income. Many resort to equity income as a means for getting regular returns. However, this has led to an over-investment in equity income and it has become difficult for investors to find a good deal.
Emerging market equity income funds are becoming more popular, with fund managers claiming that there are more opportunities in this sector that have been overlooked.
Another big area is corporate bonds, but these have been so popular and prices have risen so dramatically that many are talking of a corporate bond bubble that would likely burst if interest rates rise.
Other asset classes are available that offer income, such as property through real estate investment trusts and infrastructure projects that are long-term, often in partnership with governments. These offer stable, predictable returns that may suit some investors looking for alternatives.
Reliable income is a frequent requirement for many advisers’ clients. Many are having to look for more imaginative ways to find it.
