The marketing manager of Devon-based Unusual Risks Mortgage & Insurance Services said: “The HIV community is now protecting their homes and their families with life insurance and life assurance.”

In a poll of HIV positive respondents, 70 per cent said they had made HIV life assurance applications in connection with a mortgage since 2009.

Mr Morgan added: “The introduction of HIV life assurance products has been hugely successful because it has encouraged people to plan for the financial future and purchase a home for their families.”

A survey conducted by the medical financial advisers, looking at the financial needs of the HIV community, has shown that 30 per cent of life insurance applications are taken out as family protection for partners and children, with the percentage of HIV positive people that now have insurance running at 23 per cent.

Mr Morgan said the figures were “very encouraging” for a community that for many years was unable to get life insurance and reluctant to take out mortgage finance.

Nick Evans, founder of the Hertfordshire-based One Life Wealth Planning, said: “It is great news that the industry is responding well and proactively to medical diagnoses and treatment.”
