Mas reveals how it spent £40.9m of your cash

The Money Advice Service spent £40.9m in 2013 to 2014 contacting 16.5m customers and 90 per cent of Mas customers said they would seek help from Mas again.

In a 120-page annual report, Mas reported a surplus of income over expenditure of £500,000 for the year ended 31 March 2014, compared with £3.9m for the year ended 31 March 2013.

This resulted in an accumulated surplus of £10m as at 31 March 2014.

The service spent £8.1m on service delivery which resulted in 102,720 face-to-face sessions, 96,406 telephone, email responses and web-chat sessions, and total online customer contacts of 16.5m.

Mas also funded almost 163,000 face-to-face debt advice sessions in England and Wales through partners at a cost of £27.8m, a further £5m was spent on debt advice in Scotland, Northern Ireland and the provision of support services.

A further £14.9m was spent on “consumer engagement and corporate communication activity” including consumer campaigns, public relations, stakeholder engagement and internal communication.

Support services such as finance, facilities, procurement, legal, human resources and management information systems were £3.1m.

About £1.6m was spent on IT hosting and support services for digital services.

On 1 January 2013 Tony Hobman resigned as chief executive but his 2012 to 2013 full year equivalent basic salary was £250,000.

Caroline Rookes was appointed as chief executive on 1 February 2013 with a FYE basic of £140,000.
