Caroline Wayman has been appointed as chief ombudsman and chief executive of the Financial Ombudsman Service, according to the organisation.

Ms Wayman, who previously served as the principal ombudsman and legal director, has worked for Fos since 2000 and worked as a barrister in the past.

She succeeds Natalie Ceeney, who stepped down in November after four years in the role.

Sir Nicholas Montagu, the Fos chairman, said: “Caroline defines everything that is best about the ombudsman, and she will bring freshness, bold thinking and vigorous action to our plans for the future.

“As chief ombudsman, she will ensure the service stays relevant and attuned to the needs of our customers – consumers and business.”

The post was advertised publicly in May.

ADVISER VIEW

Stuart Read, one of the directors at Devon-based Sabre Financial, said: “I think the problem faced with the ombudsman is that in my experience insurers can’t handle complaints adequately and they tend to pass the buck too quickly to the ombudsman.

“The ombudsman gets inundated and has to sort the wheat from the chaff.”
