ECB expected to launch eurozone QE

The European Central Bank (ECB) is expected to launch a programme of quantitative easing (QE) at a monetary policy meeting later today.

According to reports, the central bank is today set to announce roughly €50bn of bond purchases a month possibly until the end of 2016.

ECB chairman Mario Draghi is likely to launch QE in a bid to stimulate economic activity in the eurozone following disappointing growth figures.

The latest inflation data from Eurostat, published earlier this month, revealed that eurozone inflation fell by 0.2 per cent compared to December 2013.

The central bank is targeting inflation of 2 per cent.

Markets are trading higher this morning, with the FTSE 100 trading up 0.20 per cent at 6,741.53, while the S&P 500 is up0.47 per cent to trade at 2,032.12 and the Eurostoxx is 0.14 per cent higher at 3,274.46.
