‘Are you underinsured?’ asked the cover feature.

It went on to explain the various methods of death protection - such as covering debts, income and potential school fees - and offered advice on how these could be assessed. Case studies were included, showing the financial implications caused by the death of a loved one, including detailed analysis of the necessary protection required to top up state benefits.

Protection was a prominent theme throughout the publication with a survey on Group PHI also conducted. Annual premiums of as little as £11.75 per £100 of benefit were available for a 29-year-old male. Seeing as loss of income due to illness or injury can cause great distress to not only the individual but also family members, this continues to be an important consideration, particularly for the self-employed.

Protection has often been the forgotten need area of future planning, but historically advisers have played a key role in ensuring financial security for individuals and families faced with death or long-term illness.

Industrial, Offices and Retail are listed as the three main areas for investment and the popularity of property is still thriving to this day. Especially with soaring house prices and the increased popularity of accessing commercial property through vehicles such as Sipps and unit trusts.

The article concluded by saying property investment ‘might be considered a safer vehicle for investment in quality terms than some others.’ Although not conclusive, many successful investors would certainly agree with that.
