Mr Warwick set up his own Cheltenham-based firm in 1981, Warwick Butchart Associates, and was awarded a CBE for his services to financial regulation in 1996. He also served as a director of the Securities and Investment Board.

Andrew Bedford, a fellow past president of the LIA, said: “There are few people who we can truly say made a difference to our industry but Len was one who lived up to that accolade.”

Janet and Jeremy Davies, joint founders and managing directors of care fees advice firm Symponia, said: “His unique ability to combine ultra-tight compliance procedures with exemplary customer care and service were just plain inspirational and should be a lesson to us all.”
