Letter of the week: A questionable phone conversation

I was happily working through an investment risk profile in my office when I received a telephone call. Answered in the normal way, I was asked: “Do you have an Isa or a deposit account?”

"Why yes, of course I do", I replied. The lady went on to tell me that she was part of the Isa Review Service and that they have been appointed by the FCA to specifically contact people and look at their Isas and deposit accounts. This was because the FCA is worried that people with Isas and deposit accounts are not achieving as much growth as they should do on these types of investments and accounts.

She went on to say that if I wanted, one of their independent advisers would then check into my Isa and deposit accounts and make an assessment of them free of charge and let me know if I could do better.

I questioned her a few times about the Isa Review Service and how she had got my number and whether they had definitely been appointed by the FCA and this was confirmed again.

I then went on to explain I was an IFA and she very quickly put the phone down – funny that.
