Institutional investors and a limited group of individuals have long been the main users of private markets.

But in recent years, there have been moves to make this sort of asset more accessible to retail investors.

While broader access to private markets could offer opportunities it comes with risk, private market investments are inherently complex, are less transparent than public market equivalents and are typically illiquid with long lock-up periods, as explained by the World Economic Forum in a recent report.

In the latter half of last year the FCA also said last year it would be launching a review into private market valuations.
