Coventry’s systems back up after blackout

Coventry Building Society’s communications systems are back up and running following a blackout that hit brokers’ business.

Technical problems with the lender’s telephone services and website yesterday (Thursday 24 August) meant brokers could not discuss cases with the building society or upload supporting documents for clients' applications.

It led to fears that some clients may experience delays in getting their mortgage offers.

A spokesperson for Coventry today told FTAdviser: “We experienced some technical difficulties yesterday which affected our telephone services and website. However, our teams worked hard to ensure that all of our mortgage completions took place as planned.

“I’m pleased to say that all of our services are up and running normally. We apologise to any brokers and their clients affected by the disruption to service yesterday and thank them for their patience.”

Coventry was the seventh-largest mortgage lender by gross volume in 2016, with £9bn-worth of lending and a 3.7 per cent market share, according to figures from the Council of Mortgage Lenders (now UK Finance).

The lender’s latest set of results revealed profits before tax grew by 2 per cent to £112.4m in the six months ending in June.

Its savings balances rose by 11 per cent over the year, with balances increasing by £1.9bn in the first half of the year.
