Godfrey joins L&G governance committee

Industry veteran Daniel Godfrey has been appointed to the Legal & General independent governance committee (IGC).

Mr Godfrey, founder of The People's Trust, a new independent investment trust, is replacing Tony Filbin, who stepped down from the IGC last August.

Mr Godfrey is a former chief executive of the Investment Association.

The IGC oversees the workplace and mature savings pension schemes operated by Legal & General and acts in the interest of members.

Dermot Courtier, chairman of the IGC, said that Mr Godfrey brings a wealth of professional expertise that strengthens the committee team.

He said: “The number of Legal & General’s schemes and members is increasing daily as a result of auto-enrolment and organic growth.

“The IGC needs robust processes in place to ensure we not only meet but exceed our statutory obligations and so achieve the best-value outcomes for contract-based scheme members.”

Legal & General manages £18.8bn in these pension schemes.

According to Emma Douglas, head of defined contribution at Legal & General Investment Management, “good governance is crucial for the IGC”.

She said that Mr Godfrey “is a well-known and well-respected industry figure, and his knowledge and experience will bring new strengths and fresh perspectives to an already impressive team”.

Besides his role at the IGC, Mr Filbin was also a member of Legal & General mastertrust board of trustees

He is being replaced in this role by Moira Beckwith. She has been at GlaxoSmithKline since 1995, where she was responsible for benefit programs, including UK benefit and pension plans.
