      How to study in quarantine

Creating a timetable that has enough flexibility built in will be a critical tool in the student’s arsenal, as Ms Parker explains: “Create a plan or timetable for yourself, set goals that are achievable and build your motivation from achieving them.

“Break the exam syllabus into sections and study each section in isolation, but don’t forget to also focus on exam technique and even revision techniques.”

The CISI also strongly advocates creating a regular schedule to “help you keep your focus. Build on your existing plans and try to make this more structured than usual.

“Put your regular study slots in your diary and commit to making them happen. If you have someone who could keep you accountable to your plan that may help you keep on track.”

Ms Parker also advises students to work out their preferred learning style is and tailor the materials they choose around this.

Finding a good spot to study is important, too: “Dedicate an area of your house to study, and make use of all of the online support that is becoming available.

“A lot of CII test centres are closed, so you’re able to take your time with your study, research and read around the subject to give yourself the best chance of passing once normality resumes”, she adds.

This should have plenty of natural light and, if the workspace is not ergonomically set up, it is vital to make sure you take plenty of physical breaks to protect your eyesight and physical health, the CISI spokesperson warns.

But it is also a good time to consider taking some courses that do not need human interaction at all.

For example, courses such as J09 Paraplanning, AF6 Senior Management and Supervision, and AF8 Retirement Income Planning, are coursework-based, and can be completed in isolation.

These can help boost your credits for chartered status while working through this crisis.

Meanwhile, CPD will be important during this time.

Keith Richards, chief executive of the Personal Finance Society, said: “We are doing everything we can to support our members as they cope with the biggest threat this country has faced for decades.

“The PFS has increased the regularity of its member communications and digital support, which includes guidance, the sharing of ‘good practice’ and general CPD – and we have a rich supply of CPD content on our online learning hub.”

And, as the CISI states: “Once this testing time is over, individuals will be looking for trusted professionals to guide them through their financial planning and help manage their money.

“The skills you develop as you study, sit, and pass your exam will be needed. Keep focused, remain calm, and keep studying.”
