Elmbridge in Surrey has seen the biggest price rises in relation to total earnings over the past five years, research from the Halifax has found.

According to data from the high-street lender, over the past two years average house prices have increased by more than the average employee’s net earnings in almost one in five – 73 out of 384 – local authority districts across the UK.

Although the top six districts were in London, outside the Capital, Elmbridge in Surrey saw the biggest rise in prices in relation to total earnings in the past five years, with a total boost of £51,854.
