The Exeter pays 94 per cent of claims in 2015

Exeter Family Friendly paid 94 per cent of income protection claims in 2015, the same figure as in 2014.

The protection specialist’s annual statistics revealed that of the 6 per cent of claims that were declined, 4 per cent were for non-disclosure and 2 per cent were due to the claimant still being able to work in their own occupation.

The data also showed that accidents, injuries, back and musculoskeletal problems accounted for almost 60 per cent of paid claims.

Its claims statistics for 2014 made for similar reading, with 94 per cent of all claims received being paid. At that stage, the mutual explained that injuries and accidents were the top cause of claims, accounting for 36 per cent, followed by back and spinal problems at 14 per cent and other musculoskeletal problems (excluding back) with 13 per cent.

Andy Chapman, chief executive of the Exeter, said: “We were the first insurer to publish our claims statistics in 2005 and have recorded consistently high figures year on year.”

“Publishing claims statistics is a key factor in building consumer confidence in protection insurance,” he added.

Michelle Gibbs, chartered financial planner at London-based Helm Godfrey, said: “It’s good they’re paying out 94 per cent of claims and hopefully this will give people reassurance that, providing they disclose any and all information requested, their claims will be paid.”
