Jupiter's Absolute Return fund tops table in September

The Jupiter Absolute Return Fund was the highest selling fund for adviser, pension and ISA sales for FundsNetwork in September.

The £572m fund which takes long and short positions in global equities, bonds and currency, returned 7.9 percent for investors over the year to the end of September, 18.3 percent over three years and 20.5 over five years.

Other loved funds included the Threadneedle UK Short Dated Corporate Bond, which was the second most popular advised fund and the Invesco Perpetual Global Targeted Returns, which was the second most popular fund for pension investments.

Across advised sales, ISAs and pension sales targeted absolute return funds were also the most popular style of fund for investors in September.

Danny Wynn head of fund partners for Fidelity International, said funds with more adventurous assets and those with broad diversification had done well with markets more resilient than expected in September.

However, he saw the popularity of defensive funds such as the Threadneedle UK Short Dated Corporate Bond fund as evidence of caution amongst investors too.

"With the US elections on the horizon and with some volatility expected in the build up to and in the immediate aftermath of the election, it’s likely that we will continue to see advisers continue to diversify their holdings within their client’s portfolios,” he said.

Paul Milburn, an investment analyst at Lowes Financial Management, is a fan of the Jupiter fund, run by James Clunie.

"Clunie is quite contrarian and is willing to short stocks when others believe they should go long," he said. "Sometimes that can give rise to flat or low returns but when calls that he has made come to fruition such as on Chinese currency, that is when you can see the fund price appreciate quite sharply."
