Santander launches mortgage video service

Santander customers can now apply for a mortgage via an in-branch video link that connects them to a UK-based adviser.

The service, which is available in 63 of the bank’s branches, has been designed to help as many customers as possible with their mortgage needs.

Santander said advisers would still be available in the buildings to cater for customers who would prefer to speak to someone in person.

Later this year, the bank plans to enhance the video-link service by enabling customers to use it in their own homes.

Miguel Sard, managing director of mortgages at Santander, said: “For most people, a mortgage is one of the biggest financial commitments they will make in their lifetime.

“We know that customers value speaking to a mortgage adviser who will explain what options are available to them and recommend a product to meet their individual needs.

“We are excited to offer customers this new mortgage video service, which works well alongside our existing offering.”

Mike Richards, director at London-based Mortgage Concepts Associates, commented: “I think technology will gradually come into this sector. Doing an interview via video is just one step beyond doing it over the phone, really.

“At least you can see them face to face. My view is that a face-to-face element is still what people want, unless they know exactly what product they want before they get it – things often come out of the woodwork that were unexpected.”
